A gel manicure is regular manicure care (shaping, cuticle care and buffing) finished with gel polish that is cured under an LED lamp. It is completely dry when you leave, so there is no smudging in the car or in your bag.

Most gel manicures look good for about two to three weeks. Gel on toes often lasts four weeks or more. If your nails bend or break easily, ask about rubber base or builder gel for a sturdier foundation.

What to expect

Prep

Shaping, cuticle care and buffing, so the gel has a clean surface to bond to. Oils and leftover product are the most common reason gel lifts.

Color and cure

Thin coats of gel color, each cured under an LED lamp, with the tip of the nail sealed so water and daily wear do not get underneath.

03

Finish

A glossy top coat and cuticle oil, plus aftercare tips. Add chrome, cat-eye, French tips or glitter for $20 each.

Make your gel manicure last

Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning.
Use cuticle oil every day. It keeps the nail and skin flexible so the gel is less likely to crack.
Do not use your nails as tools to open cans, peel labels or scrape.
Avoid very hot water for the first day after your appointment.
Never pick or peel gel off. It pulls layers of your natural nail with it.
Plan your next visit about two to three weeks out for hands and four to five weeks for toes.

How much is a gel manicure at Nail Garden?

Add gel polish to any manicure for $25. With The Garden Essential Spa Manicure ($35) that is $60. A Rubber Base Gel Manicure starts at $75. Prices are starting prices and may vary by salon.

How long does a gel manicure last?

Most gel manicures look good for about two to three weeks. After that, your natural nail has grown out enough that you will see a gap at the cuticle. Gel pedicures usually last four weeks or more.

Does gel polish damage your nails?

Gel polish itself is not what harms nails. Damage usually comes from picking or peeling it off, which pulls layers of your natural nail with it. Let a nail tech remove it. Removal is free when you get a new gel application and $15 on its own.

What if my gel lifts or chips in the first few days?

Tell the salon as soon as you notice. Early lifting usually points to prep, application or aftercare, and your salon can take a look.

What is the difference between gel polish and builder gel?

Gel polish is thin and flexes with your nail. If your nails bend or break easily, rubber base or builder gel adds structure. See our page on builder gel and BIAB nails.
