How Long Does a Gel Manicure Last? (And How to Make It Last Longer)

A fresh gel manicure looks perfect on day one. The question everyone asks is how long it will stay that way. Here is what to expect from gel polish, what makes it chip early, and the simple habits that help it last, from the nail techs at Nail Garden.

How long should a gel manicure last?

Most gel manicures look good for about two to three weeks. After that, your natural nail has grown out enough that you will see a gap at the cuticle, even if the color is still intact. Gel pedicures usually last longer, often four weeks or more, because toenails grow more slowly and take less wear.

If your gel is peeling or chipping within the first few days, something went wrong with prep, application or aftercare, and it is worth telling the salon.

Why gel chips early

  • Oils on the nail plate. Gel needs a clean, dry surface to bond. Lotion, natural oils or leftover product can cause lifting.
  • Gel too close to the skin. If gel touches the cuticle or side walls, it can lift at the edges and peel.
  • Edges not sealed. The tip of the nail should be "capped" with each coat so water and daily wear do not get underneath.
  • Weak or bendy natural nails. Gel polish is thin and flexes with your nail. If your nails bend easily, a stronger base like builder gel or rubber base can help.
  • Hands in water. Long baths, dishes and swimming soften the nail underneath the gel.

How to make your gel manicure last longer

  • Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning.
  • Use cuticle oil every day. It keeps the nail and skin flexible so the gel is less likely to crack.
  • Do not use your nails as tools to open cans, peel labels or scrape.
  • Avoid very hot water for the first day after your appointment.
  • Never pick or peel gel off. It pulls layers of your natural nail with it.

Gel polish vs. rubber base vs. builder gel

If regular gel never lasts on you, the problem may be your natural nail, not the polish. Rubber base adds a thicker, flexible layer under the color, and builder gel adds real structure to weak or bendy nails. Both tend to last longer than standard gel on nails that flex.
